Next to the Checheng Wood Museum sits the log pond, which was the first step in processing logs that arrived in the area. In the past, raw logs were soaked in the pond for about three months to prevent decay, insect damage, cracking, and warping, a crucial step to extend the life of the wood. Cranes would lower the logs into the pond, and the scene of floating logs was a common sight during the height of the timber industry.
