West Gate
West Gate

The West Gate, which has safeguarded the settlement for more than two centuries, was built in 1811. Also known as Baozhong Gate, it is the only one of the four historic fortification gates to remain fully intact and is designated as a county-level historic site. It stands as an important military structure built by Hakka ancestors to defend against external threats and protect their community.

Constructed of red brick and timber, the gate retains its upright swallowtail ridge on the roof. The imperial plaque reading “Baozhong” mounted above the entrance symbolizes the Hakka spirit of loyalty and honor in defending the homeland and community. Circular gun ports on both sides of the gate, combined with bat-shaped clay reliefs below, ingeniously merge military defense with imagery of bestowed blessings. A concealed mezzanine lies behind the plaque, while the couplets carved on the gate pillars vividly record the history of early Hakka settlement and development on the Pingtung Plain.

Though the smoke of battle has long since faded, the gate still stands firmly along Donggen Road, quietly watching over the most authentic everyday life of the Jiadong Hakka community.
