The Xiao Family Residence is among the rarest and best-preserved Hakka residences with five courtyards in Taiwan and is designated as a National Historic Monument. The complex not only embodies the essence of traditional Hakka architecture, but also incorporates Baroque style terrazzo ornamentation popular during the Japanese colonial period, bearing witness to nearly two centuries of the family's fortunes and the passage of time.
As one passes through the successive halls, the design reveals central axis symmetry alongside exquisite wood carvings and painted caisson ceilings, throughout reflecting a strong family ethos of honoring ancestors and remembering one's roots. Walking through the residence feels like a journey through time, immersing visitors in a century of Hakka splendor. As light and shadow shift across the space, visitors can deeply experience the grandeur of one of southern Taiwan's most distinguished Hakka family stories.
