2025 Harvest Celebration: Traditional Opera and Folk Songs Showcase New Energy in Hakka Culture

Date:2025-12-08

Hakka communities have a deep love for traditional opera and often stage performances as offerings of thanks to the deities. This year, the first “Harvest Opera” performance will be held at Zhongyi Pavilion in Zhutian Township, Pingtung County, and will later tour Hakka communities in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Hualien, and Taitung. Chiu Hsing-wei, Deputy Minister of the Hakka Affairs Council, emphasized that this initiative is part of President Lai Ching-te’s Hakka policy on “Public Hakka,” hoping to preserve and promote Hakka culture through music and theater.

The Harvest Opera series will run from December 2025 through February 2026, with 13 performances across eight cities and counties, including Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Nantou, Pingtung, Hualien, and Taitung. The Hakka Affairs Council invites families to enjoy the performances together and relive the lively atmosphere of temple festivals from childhood.

Through daytime folk song gatherings and evening Harvest Opera performances on temple courtyard stages, each day brings together competition and devotion, allowing Hakka language and performing arts to flourish "on stage and in the villages."
