Global Hakka Music Awards call for entries
A press conference introducing the music contest was held on March 21 and attended by HAC Minister Yiong Con-ziin, jury convener Ayugo Huang (黃連煜), Hakka singer Julia Peng (彭佳慧), and William Hsu (許惟援), the deputy general manager of Chinese Repertoire Division at Sony Music Entertainment, as well as award winners in previous years, including the band Siàu-lú khah-lah (少女卡拉), Gina Yang (楊淑喻), Joyin Wang (王喬尹), and Lulu Lin (林沛蕎).
HAC Minister Yiong said that Hakka songs have impressed the mainstream music scene over the past two to three years. Among the countries in the world where Hakka people live, Taiwan is the most liberal and democratic with the most complete music industry ecology, added Yiong. He pointed out that members of the ballad classes of Hakka associations in Southeast Asian countries mostly sing Taiwan’s Hakka songs.
Regardless of nationality, those who are interested in Hakka music and seek to express their emotions via Hakka songs are all welcomed to sign up for the contest, the Minister said, hoping that, through the competition, Hakka music will expand into the global market and that Taiwan will be the international hub of Hakka pop music.
Ayugo Huang, who serves as the jury convener of the contest, said that there are small adjustments to this year’s competition system, including the newly added “singing category” and the opportunity for the semi-final contestants and finalists to be trained by professional instructors. Huang added that more outstanding instructors will be invited to join the event as there are many experienced Hakka musicians in the pop music community.
