Local governments across Taiwan work together to host World Hakka Expo 2023

Date:2022-06-30
In partnership with the Taoyuan City government, the Hakka Affairs Council (HAC) will host the World Hakka Expo from Aug. 11 through Oct. 15 in 2023. Representatives from 13 cities/counties in Taiwan signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for co-organizing the expo at Taoyuan’s Yong'an Conch Cultural Park (永安海螺文化體驗園區) on June 21, with HAC Minister Yiong Con-ziin and Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) attending the signing ceremony.

Responding to the question of whether Taiwan has the ability to hold the international Hakka expo, Minister Yiong said that, despite being a small country, Taiwan has the diverse Hakka culture, adding that natural and cultural landscapes vary in different Hakka regions across the country, creating various Hakka impressions, such as Taoyuan’s agricultural ponds, Miaoli’s mountains and hills, carpentry culture in Taichung’s Dongshi District, and the rare Zhao’an-accented Hakka-speaking settlement in Yunlin’s Lunbei Township, as well as the clan organizational system in southern Taiwan’s Liugdui Hakka areas and the Hakka immigrant villages in Hualien and Taitung.

Furthermore, Minister Yiong pointed out Taiwan is a free and democratic country, a perfect place for fostering global Hakka cultural innovation, noting that Hakka cultural transmission is maintained by promoting language revival with creativity on the island.

Governments of 13 cities/counties, including Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City and County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, Hualien County, and Taitung County, will work together to present the distinctiveness and richness of Taiwanese Hakka culture at the expo.

The expo is the world’s first-ever exposition focusing on Hakka culture, displaying the features of the Hakka community, including history, beliefs, music, literature, artefacts, crafts, cuisine, and attire, with 5G technology. The main exhibition area will be located at Taoyuan Airport MRT’s Taoyuan Sports Park Station, divided into two major themed pavilions—the World Pavilion and the Taiwan Pavilion. The former will reflect the localization and diversified cultures of the Hakka around the world, while the latter will showcase quintessential characteristics of the Taiwanese Hakka culture.
