Neipu was originally occupied by the Makatao people (one of the Taiwanese plains indigenous peoples) and was later reclaimed by Hakka people. It belonged to “Hou” (back) Dui (Hakka groups/regions in Qing Dynasty) of the Liu (six) Dui’s. The town has a strong scholarly style, producing many scholarly and cultural talents and elites. Pingtung University of Science and Technology has the largest campus ground in all of Taiwan, while Changli Temple is the only temple in Taiwan dedicated to Han Yu, a Chinese historian, poet, philosopher, and politician during Tang Dynasty. Every year, Han Yu Cultural Festival brings exam candidates here to pray for good test results.
- There are scattered ancient houses and temples on Neipu Old Street. When you turn into Qinghua Alley, you can see the blue-and-white wall paintings adding retro Hakka style to the alley.
- Liudui Hakka Cultural Park has rich Hakka history and culture on display. The huge umbrella Hakka cluster architecture is a symbol of Hakka unity embodied by the paper umbrellas.
