The old name of Miaoli City is “Maoli,” which means “plain” in the Taokas language. The Taokas Maoli Tribe was once located here. Later, Hakka settlers came, and gradually formed today's Miaoli City. Today, more than 80% of the residents are Hakka people, making it a typical Hakka town.

- Banglong (bombing dragon) culture combines Lantern Festival with martial arts performances. It is a unique event only in Miaoli!
- Gongweixu Tunnel is the only railway brick-wall tunnel in Taiwan. The colorful neon lights are romantic.
