Located in the middle of Miaoli County's coastline, Tongxiao Township is a small mountain town near the sea with a long history. In the past, its proximity to the deep and wide Nanshi River made it a crucial transshipment center for goods, with ships bustling day and night. This constant activity earned it the name Tongxiao, meaning "all night long."
Blessed with its natural geography, Tongxiao offers both mountains and sea, with beautiful coastlines and scenic views from Hutoushan (Hutou Mountain). The serene and lovely natural environment provides a rich variety of recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy the bright and clear sea views or stroll through the forest to soak in the natural essence.
The people of Tongxiao are devout, with thriving temples, a rich history, profound religious culture, and diverse local industries. The township is equally composed of Hakka and Minnan people. Visitors can experience the tranquil and leisurely rural life and delve into Hakka culture and customs, making it an ideal place to spend a night exploring all that Tongxiao has to offer.
- Over a hundred years old, Xinpu Railway Station is the closest wooden station to the sea on the Taiwan Railways’ Western Trunk Line. The overpass offers a close-up view of the unique round bull's eye windows. The railway and wooden facilities of the station exude a retro nostalgic charm, enriched by the passage of time.
- Hidden within lush trees, Tongxiao Shrine is one of Taiwan's top 100 religious sites, as if a guardian of time, transporting visitors back to the Showa era. The shrine's architecture, torii gates, stone lanterns, and dense old trees weave together a strong Japanese historical charm. Notably, the worship hall features the world’s only Minnan-style swallow-tail ridged roof, quietly telling the story of history's passage.
- The challenging and dangerous life at sea has fostered a deep and enduring Matsu faith among coastal residents. Gongtian Temple, a sacred place in the hearts of locals, carries a century-old tradition of the walking pilgrimage, held annually as a grand religious festival. This event is recognized by the Ministry of Culture as an important folk culture of intangible cultural heritage.
- Highway 61, flanked by mountains on one side and the coast on the other, offers a picturesque drive straight to the azure sea. Known for its stunning sunset views, where an orange-red sun hovers over the horizon, this route is dubbed Tongxiao Sunset Avenue. It is considered one of Taiwan's top ten scenic highways. Popular photo spots along the way include the Totoro Bus Stop, the Watermelon of Happiness, and the Guardian Owl Statue.
- Originally called Huyu, Hutoushan (Hutou Mountain) offers expansive views. The summit features Taiwan's only Russo-Japanese War Memorial. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tongxiao, gaze at the fishing port, and admire the interplay of the blue coastline and gently turning wind turbines, providing a refreshing sense of serenity.
