Date:2023-12-29

Today (December 29), the Hakka Affairs Council organized the Hakka Village Bâ-lí Black Tea Tasting Feast at the Grand Hotel Taipei to promote the specialty tea industry from Hakka villages, mentor businesses on branding, and foster collaboration with renowned enterprises. HAC Minister Yiong Con-ziin expressed his gratitude to the Grand Hotel Taipei for its collaboration with HAC in launching the Bâ-lí Black Tea. It is hoped that this cooperation model can enable traditional local specialties of Hakka villages to gain visibility and become part of our daily lives today. Local Hakka brands can also enrich Taiwan’s present-day culture and lifestyle.

Minister Yiong stated that in recent years, HAC has promoted 8 local Hakka brands. The goal is to consolidate the power of local communities to strengthen community economic chains through local brand building. Moreover, delicacies of Hakka villages must be taken to new frontiers. These exquisite local specialties deserve to be carried over from traditional settings to our day-to-day tables. As more people fall in love with these dishes, this will drive job opportunities and economic development in Hakka villages.

Distinguished guests of the tea tasting feast included renowned food writer Yeh Yi-lan, Grand Hotel Taipei Chairman Lin Yu-sheng, and Chiu Chui-feng, Deputy Director of the Tea and Beverage Research Station, Ministry of Agriculture. Together, they savored the Bâ-lí Black Tea, unique to Hakka villages, allowing tea lovers to discover what Hakka tastes like.

Deputy Director Chiu Chui-feng shared that the primary ingredient of Bâ-lí Black Tea consists of single buds with two leaves of the Chin-Shin-Dapan variety. These are then dried using the withering technique for Oriental Beauty Tea and fermented using the fermentation process for black tea. The whole leaves are evenly shaped and the taste is sweet at first with a fruity aftertaste. It possesses both the floral and fruity hints of oolong and black teas, with the strong honey-like flavor and sweet aftertaste of Oriental Beauty tea. This product cannot be missing from tea lovers’ collections.
